The terrace

A terrace on Place du Tertre, in Montmartre.

Among the painters, from the first coffee to the last glass.

Chez Eugène, a restaurant and wine bar at 17 place du Tertre, has a terrace in the middle of Montmartre's painters' square, open from March to October, 8am to 2am, with the kitchen running non-stop from 8am to 11pm. It can be booked online, it's wheelchair accessible, and it can be hired privately for up to 100 people. The Sacré-Cœur is a three-minute walk away.

Where it is

The only restaurant terrace among the easels

Place du Tertre is Montmartre's painters' square, 250 metres behind the Sacré-Cœur. Our terrace sits right on it, under the red awning, between the portrait artists and caricaturists who have worked here for a century. You have lunch with an easel two metres away, dinner facing the lit-up façades, and in the morning you drink your coffee on a square that's still empty. It's not a rooftop: it's better, it's the square itself.

Hours

Open 8am to 2am, March to October

The terrace is set up from March to October, every day, from 8am for breakfast until 2am for the last glass. The kitchen serves non-stop from 8am to 11pm: breakfast until 11:30am, then the bistro menu without a break, eggs mayonnaise, onion soup, beef and carrot stew, cheese and charcuterie boards. In winter, the dining room and the upstairs room have the same windows onto the square.

Morning

Breakfast on the terrace, before everyone else

At 8am the square is empty and the painters are setting up their easels. It's breakfast time, set breakfasts from €11 to €24, homemade pancakes and organic eggs, and onion soup for those who walked up the hill. We're the only place open on the square at that hour.

Evening

After 10pm, Place du Tertre is yours

The other restaurants close one by one, the painters' chairs are stacked, the square empties. What's left is Eugène's candles, the Sacré-Cœur lit up at the end of the street and the sound of glasses. We stay open until 2am, open one last bottle from the cellar, and the terrace becomes the best wine bar in Montmartre to finish it.

A word from Julie

Not many terraces look out onto easels. Ours lives to the rhythm of the neighbourhood: quiet in the morning, full at lunch, all ours after 10pm once the neighbours have stacked their chairs. It's our favourite Montmartre.

Good to know

Which restaurant has a terrace on Place du Tertre?

Chez Eugène, a wine bistro at 17 place du Tertre, has a terrace in the middle of the square, among the painters, open March to October from 8am to 2am, kitchen from 8am to 11pm.

Can I book a table on the terrace?

Yes, online or by phone on +33 1 46 06 73 49, with “terrace” in the message. We do our best depending on the weather: if it turns, we seat you inside with the same view.

Is the terrace open in winter?

It's set up from March to October. In winter the dining room and the upstairs room overlooking the square take over, and the candles do the rest.

Can I just have a drink on the terrace?

Yes, it's a wine bar as much as a restaurant: a glass at the bar from €7, a cheese board, and a 800-reference cellar if you want to go further. Until 2am.

Is the terrace wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the terrace and the ground floor are step-free. Only the upstairs room is reached by stairs.

Is there a rooftop in Montmartre with a view?

Not here, and no need: the terrace is at the top of the hill, on Place du Tertre itself, 130 metres above sea level, with the painters around you and the Sacré-Cœur three minutes away.

Can the terrace be hired privately?

Yes, from March to October, for up to 100 people standing, for an afterwork, a birthday or a corporate party. Aperitif formats from €25 per person. Ask for the brochure on the groups page.

Shall we keep in touch?

Our evenings, upcoming events and new arrivals in the cellar. One email a month, no more.
